Gjon Mili, Pablo Picasso in a Minotaur Mask, Côte d’Azur, 1949

When wearing a mask on holiday was something else entirely… This picture, taken by the Albanian photographer Gjon Mili, shows Picasso proudly sporting a minotaur mask, worn back to front to reveal a hand-drawn smiley face penned by the artist himself. It is one of a number of Picasso portraits that Mili made for LIFE magazine in 1949, including what would become the image-maker’s most famous series, capturing the lauded Spanish artist as he drew with light.
