Happy Bank Holiday Monday to our UK readers! This is what we’d like to be doing today, although the weather seems to have other plans. This summery cyclist was painted by emerging Ghanaian artist Hamid Nii Nortey, whose debut solo exhibition opens this week at ADA gallery in Accra. Nortey creates evocative scenes of urban life in the Ghanaian capital, enlivening the stylish figures that punctuate them with a distinctive cross hatching technique. His aim, in the words of ADA, is to offer “a visual snapshot of the growing middle- and upper-class elite that has come to represent an increasing share of Accra… and to restructure prevailing visual narratives of the [African] continent… [to inspire] pride and hope.”
