Harald Sohlberg, Spring Evening, Akershus Fortress, 1913

Countryside, calm waters and a never-ending sunset, could you ask for anything more on a spring evening? Harald Sohlberg’s incredible depiction of a sunset melting into the mountains is perfection. The famous Norwegian artist was obsessed with painting the landscape of his home country, paying particular mind to the spiritual significance of the mountains and the stunning colours that flooded the sky depending on the season. Although Solhberg actively denied any affiliation to Nordic Naturalism or the Symbolists, these influences are evident in his fantastical portrayal of the world around him, where carefully articulated shadowy trees often foreground the world beyond. The largest collection of his works ever to be mounted in the UK are on show at Dulwich Picture Gallery, until 2 June.
