This tantalizing totem was one of eight such structures built between 1961 and 1962 by the French architect Henri Mouette. They were commissioned to enliven the eight children’s ski villages that existed in France at the time: dedicated resorts comprised of huge chalets, which sheltered thousands of young skiers each year. The villages were eventually closed, resulting in five of the gloriously graphic sculptures being destroyed, but this one—from Bachat-Bouloud in Chamrousse—happily still stands strong.
