Hiroshi Nakamura, Ribbon Chapel, 2014

This hypnotically swirling structure looks a bit like a helter-skelter but is in fact a wedding chapel, built by the Japanese architect Hiroshi Nakamura and situated on a hill on the coast of Hiroshima. The chapel’s glass exterior is encircled by two curved staircases, clad in timber, which meet at a rooftop platform that overlooks the sea. This is entirely symbolic, the architect has explained: By entwining two spiral stairways, we realised a self-supporting structure that architecturally embodies the act of marriage in a pure form. Who would you elope with to tie the knot in this magical spot?
