Hokusai, Clear Day with a Southern Breeze, c1931

On this day in 781 one of the oldest recorded eruptions of Mount Fuji took place. The Japanese mountain was the subject of ukiyo-e artist Hokusai’s sensational woodblock series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which encompasses the famed Great Wave off Kanagawa. Although the roaring seascape is internationally recognized (there’s even an emoji), Clear Day with a Southern Breeze—or “Red Fuji” as it is more commonly known—is the print most widely celebrated in Japan.
