Born in Lebanon in 1931, Huguette Caland spent most of her life in Paris and California before returning to Beirut in 2013. She was known for her colourful, whimsical paintings, and her caftan designs, but less so for her erotic art, which she created throughout her fifty year career. Subversive and chic, it’s a wonder that her show at Tate St Ives—opening tomorrow—is the first solo exhibition of Caland’s work in the UK, bringing together large-scale canvases and detailed drawings that showcase her originality and style.
