Happy 92nd birthday to the great Frank Gehry! This remarkable building is the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. It’s typical of the architect’s singular aesthetic, “draped and wrapped [as it is] with a mountainous metal-clad skin, faced in shingled panels and punctured with a grid of windows”, to quote Architect Magazine. It houses a clinic, research centre and Alzheimer’s charity, but Gehry took great pains to make sure that its interior was calming and warm, rather than clinical. “When we go to work in a sculptural masterpiece, it has the effect of making you want to live up to the expectations established by the building,” said the centre’s director Jeffrey Cummings of its positive ramifications.
