The woman who hangs upside down in this video still is Thai artist Kawita Vatanajyankur, who is featured in the Bangkok Biennale which opens this week. Vatanajyankur performs a series of physical experiments that playfully, and sometimes painfully, test the limits of her own body, and challenge the viewer to keep looking well beyond their comfort zone, while wilfully exploiting the global visual language of instant gratification in acid pop colours. In her recent video work, Performing Textiles, she dips her body in dye and binds it in thread: a direct reference to the Thai textile industry and its majority of female factory workers.
