Marina Abramović, Rhythm 0, 1974

“This is the last act of my life,” Marina Abramović tells Emily Steer for the cover story of our latest issue. “You start thinking that every day matters, to cut the bullshit and do the things you want.” Over the course of her career, the Serbian artist has often sought to confront fear, pain and the inevitability of death head on (this 1970s performance piece, Rhythm 0, saw her interact with 72 objects, including a gun loaded with a single bullet) with the aim of lessening their hold. “I always wanted to show people you can get rid of pain if you really put your mind to it,” she tells Steer. “I always wanted it to be inspirational.” Purchase Issue 47 here to read on.
