Interiors goals à la Richard Neutra, the architect behind this covetable home, built in 1935 for the movie director Josef von Sternberg in California’s San Fernando Valley. A modernist gem, the house was defined externally by “huge, generous swooping metal-clad curves,” to quote Drawing Matter, while the inside boasted “well-ordered rectilinear spaces”, as depicted here in one of a series of photographs of the building shot by Julius Shulman. Criminally, the house was bulldozed in 1972, making these images all the more special.
