This majestic monument sits in the centre of a circular artificial island in Baghdad, and was opened in 1983 to commemorate fallen Iraqi soldiers. It was designed by architect Saman Kamal and artist Ismail Fatah Al Turk, and comprises a dome, divided in two and covered in turquoise tiles. In between the two concave structures sits an eternal flame, while beneath the monument lies a museum, library, lecture hall, and exhibition space.
