Ivan Puig, Hasta Las Narices, 2004

That sinking feeling… This suggestive set-up, in which a white Volkswagen Beetle vanishes lopsidedly into a white liquid, is the handiwork of Mexican artist Ivan Puig. Puig works across multiple disciplines, from sculpture and installation art to photography and film, but his output is linked by what he terms “the critical perspective and humour present in his observations of the social environment”. This work’s title, Hasta Las Narices, translates as “fed up”, and centres on the “proportion of events and their relativity”. It is the first in a three-part series that ends with a sculpture of a toy car floating in a glass of milk—a comic zooming out of this initial, more catastrophic-looking scene.
