Jack McLaren, Patterns on the Snow, Bayfield, 1970

This sublime wintery scene, showing linear shadows on a snowy forest floor, was painted by the late Canadian artist Jack McLaren in 1970. McLaren’s evocative, light-infused landscape paintings, made in and around Huron County, Ontario, rendered the artist (who was also a successful illustrator and caricaturist) something of a local celebrity. Yet on a global scale his work remains woefully underrated.
