James Barnor, Baby on All Fours (Nii Armah), c. 1952

A Wednesday workout. This summer, the remarkable Ghanaian photographer James Barnor will enjoy his first retrospective in France, taking place at the LUMA Foundation as part of the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival. “From Accra to London and from London to Accra, from the end of the colonial era to the beginning of the 1990s, from studio portraits to press commissions, the exhibition will offer a kaleidoscopic look at Barnor’s work”, the photographer’s Instagram explains. This particular image was taken in the early 1950s in Barnor’s Accra studio. The image-maker once described it as his all-time favourite picture due to the baby’s perfectly timed impromptu plank.
