Jamie Isenstein, Arm Chair, 2006

Anyone else feel like they’re melding with their furniture? This literal arm (and leg) chair is part of a 2006 performance by American artist Jamie Isenstein. To quote Andrew Krepps Gallery, Isenstein “confuses subject and object in her work, which spans sculpture, drawing, and performance, often turning objects into bodies and bodies into objects”. This is of course, exactly what’s happening here. For this Dada-channeling piece, Isenstein clambered inside the specially adapted velvet chair and was wheeled ceremoniously onto a stage, where she sat beneath dancing lights, while old-time vaudeville music played, before being wheeled off again.
