Jammie Holmes, Blame the Man, 2021

Sunday submersion… In the new issue of Elephant, Charlotte Jansen introduces paintings that ponder death and spirituality, centring specifically on works by Japanese artist Tomoo Gokita and American artists Danielle Joy McKinney and Jammie Holmes. “Painting can be a form of redemption for those taken away too soon,” she writes of the latter, the author of this stirring scene. “Holmes paints the dead, for the dead: physical bodies being carried away, cleansed of this earth and its injustices. There is heartbreak there, pain expressed in solemn blues and eyes cast down. Clouds continue to pass over the sky, the waves of the ocean still lick the shore. Where life left off, the painting may continue.” Purchase your copy here to read on.
