Jason Yarmosky, Vogue, 2017

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman, and a nanna in a swimsuit, of course. This strangely charming image is surreal in more ways than its subject: what initially looks like a photographic portrait is, in fact, a pencil drawing by Brooklyn-based artist  Jason Yarmosky, who’s showing a series of his photorealistic images in a week-long show from 29 August at The Double Diamond house in Westhampton Beach, New York. The artist’s work is inspired by his grandparents and their “immortal” attitude to life, according to the gallery; and it’s their joie de vivre that has long inspired him to explore ideas around human connectivity, age, mortality and intergenerational friendships. The series on show, entitled Lovers and Friends, depicts an apparently strange cast of characters who are all in fact people close to the artist; though whether or not these people have actually met one another is up to the viewers’ imagination.
