This is a still from A Machine for Living In, a film by artists Jayden Ali and Lotty Sana, offering a piercing critique of “the modernist aesthetic that has come to saturate Marseille and the modern world,” as Ali writes in a thought-provoking essay for Elephant’s latest issue. It does so “by contrasting two patriarchal ‘machines for living in’ from different eras: [Le Corbusier’s] Unité d’Habitation and Kim Kardashian,” he continues. “Both offer a lifestyle built on ideals formulated through male perception; the Unité’s promise of family homes (ultimately) unattained, and Kim’s image of an equally unattainable home life.” Get your hands on a copy to read on.
