Holding each other close… This tender photograph features in American photographer Joan E Biren’s landmark photobook Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians, originally self-published in 1979 and reissued by Anthology Editions last year. “This communal chosen family album captures the tenderness between women loving women, memorialising lesbian life and creating space to come home to ourselves,” said writer Gem Fletcher in her 2021 feature on the book for Elephant. “It illustrates a community manifesting; visual evidence validating lesbian existence as they tried to figure out a path forward.” Click here to read the article in full.
