Jenny Holzer, The 42nd Street Art Project, 1994

Happy birthday to the one and only Jenny Holzer, who turns 72 today! Here is one of her most poignant “truisms” (or “short sentences that read as unassailable statements of truth,” in the words of Sprüth Magers) displayed on a usually empty theatre marquee on Manhattan’s historic 42nd Street in 1994. This intervention was part of a wider project, orchestrated by public arts organisation Creative Time, that saw Holzer and several other artists create temporary, site-specific works all along the street, inviting interaction and contemplation.
