Happy Sandwich Day! Who doesn’t love a sandwich? Some say the classic lunchbox filler was invented in 1762 when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, asked for his meat to be served between two slices of bread so that his gambling game wouldn’t be interrupted. Others look to Jewish Rabbi Hillel the Elder in the first century BC—for Passover he would put lamb, mixed nuts and herbs between two pieces of unleavened bread. This kooky sculpture by Jesse Wine will be showing at Independent Brussels next week.
