A fine balance between manmade and organic forms, Jodie Carey’s works often look as though they have been transported straight from the great outdoors into the gallery space, bringing with them a mix of stones and material spills that have attached themselves seemingly by chance. The artist is currently showing as part of Frieze Sculpture Park in London, with a solid yet fragile work which was cast in the earth. Her new canvases are also at Edel Assanti in London. Formed from thick woven bands of fabric, the works are permeated by the light that floods through the gallery ceiling, but they are also tough and worn, marked all over with pencil lines, areas of stitching and thick white paint. “By making work that is less literal and obstructing your ideas you are able to widen the conversation around the works,” the artist told us of her practice in a previous interview. “Sometimes it even just speaks about the process of making art.”
