Johann Wenzel Bergl, Schloss Schönbrunn, 1769–78

How floral is too floral when it comes to interior decorating? In the mind of 18th-century Bohemian artist Johann Wenzel Bergl (the author of these glorious murals adorning the walls of the ground-floor apartment suites at the Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna) there’s no such thing. The magnificent palace was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, and these depictions of lush landscapes and Baroque gardens were commissioned by the Empress Maria Theresia von Österreich to bring the outdoors in when she became too frail to endure the summer heat.
