John Baldessari, Goya Series: It Couldn’t Be Helped, 1997

Sometimes these things just happen! This gleefully grinning work by the late, great John Baldessari is taken from the American artist’s Goya Series. A response to Francisco Goya’s iconic etchings, The Disasters of War (1810-20), combine violent depictions of combat with sardonically sanitized titles. Baldessari’s works also pair text and imagery to recontextualise both parts in relation to one another—in his case, to offer a more light-hearted, open-ended commentary on the media age, with frequently funny results.
