Josephine Pryde, Scale XXVIII, 2012

Studio photography—quite simply, photography created by artists with a studio-based practice—is a sprawling arena. Simon Lee Gallery in New York is taking on the monumental task of surveying a huge chunk of its history (perhaps the hugest possible) from the years 1887 to 2019. Through these works the gallery presents the changing face of technology and photographic techniques over the years, and offers a peek into the activities of photographers specifically when they are making work behind closed doors. Expect lots of nudity, intimate portraits… and the odd guinea pig for good measure. This fluffy one, photographed by Josephine Pryde, is sure cheering up our Friday.
