An eerie, midweek make out by Julia Soboleva. The Latvia-born, London-based artist creates her distinctive artworks by painting and collaging onto found photographs. “Being born and raised in a post-Soviet era and not being able to find her own place against the complicated past of her nation, Soboleva explores the notions of family, taboo and trans-generational trauma in her work,” her SHOWstudio bio reads. Soboleva’s world is one where bird-headed beings roam menacingly, rendered in fluid strokes, while spectral figures perform strange rituals, her images both unsettling and impossible to look away from.
