Kahlil Johnson has been announced as one of thirty artists who will be included in the fifth run of the Hammer Museum’s biennale, Made in LA. The filmmaker—featured in Elephant issue 31—will bring his most ambitious work yet, BLKNWS, to the city he calls home in a new iteration that will reach more audiences than ever before. He will be broadcasting the conceptual news programme (presented in his instantly recognizable two-channel format) in sites all over LA, particularly in the south of the city where much of Joseph’s work has been shot, and at black-owned businesses and everyday environments. The newscast blurs the boundaries between art, reportage, entrepreneurship and cultural critique in Joseph’s arresting visual style.
Running from June to August at two locations, east and west of the city (The Hammer and the Huntingdon), Made in LA is a deep exploration of Los Angeles through the art that’s made there, a meander through its mythologies, histories, subcultures and specificities. Other artists selected this year include the painter, Katja Seib, artist Larry Johnson (who will produce a new series of billboards around the city) and an installation by Aria Dean, editor and curator of Rhizome.
