Kate Lyddon’s paintings—full of distorted figures whose flesh often looks as though it is melting away, warping the human form—make for intense viewing. They feel debouched and gutsy, a celebration of life in all its excess and also a reference to the darker sides of it. In a new show at Studio 1.1new show at Studio 1.1 in London, the British artist is paired with John Summers, who also explores the human form through his sculptures. “Kate Lyddon shows us a world that’s still under development,” says the gallery, “peopled with figures who, sometimes alarming, often poignant, usually with their own weird nightmarish elegance, almost touch on the visionary.”
