In Elephant Issue 45, we looked at some of the key exhibitions addressing trauma through art in 2021. Included was the late Nigerian-born curator Okwui Enwezor’s show Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America at New York’s New Museum, which explored—through a number of vital artworks including this striking painting by Kerry James Marshall—“how the failure to tackle white nationalism has perpetuated the pattern of Black death and mourning”.
