Some Wednesday sunshine, courtesy of Ghanaian painter Kwesi Botchway, whose work appears on one of two new covers for Elephant 45, alongside that of Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe. Botchway’s output focuses on portraiture, placing figures front and centre against pared-back, brightly coloured backdrops, as per this brilliant depiction of his contemporary, the artist Amoako Boafo. “I… wanted to create a movement of Afro Impressionism, which I have never seen before,” Botchway told Amah-Rose Abrams of his singular mode of painting in a joint interview with Quaicoe for the issue. “So, when you look at my style it is a blend of Relativism and Impressionism. I am trying to create this movement in my own way, in my own language.” See the full feature in Elephant 45, out now.
