Some Wednesday sunshine, courtesy of Ghanaian painter Kwesi Botchway, whose work appears on one of two new covers for Elephant 45
, alongside that of Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe. Botchway’s output focuses on portraiture, placing figures front and centre against pared-back, brightly coloured backdrops, as per this brilliant depiction of his contemporary, the artist Amoako Boafo. “I… wanted to create a movement of
Afro Impressionism, which I have never seen before,” Botchway told Amah-Rose Abrams of his singular mode of painting in a joint interview with Quaicoe for the issue. “So, when you look at my style it is a blend of Relativism and Impressionism. I am trying to create this movement in my own way, in my own language.” See the full feature in Elephant 45, out now.
