Laurie Anderson, Duets on Ice Performance, Italy, 1974–5

In this wonderful archive photograph, the inimitable multimedia artist Laurie Anderson (one of our two Autumn/Winter 2021 cover stars) carries out her 1970s performance Duets on Ice. For this piece, she stood on street corners in New York, and later Italy, wearing ice skates atop a block of ice. There, she played a duet on a violin embedded with a speaker simultaneously emitting a tune, continuing to play until the ice melted. Purchase the new issue of Elephant to read our interview with the veteran US creative, touching upon her half century of work—spanning experimental performances, expressive illustration, music and film projects—and her hopes for the future.
