Laurie Simmons, Walking Gun, 1991

Kickstarting the week with this explosive image by Laurie Simmons, from her nineties series of large-scale photographs, Objects on Legs. In each image, the American artist combines a pair of doll’s legs with an everyday object—from miniature houses to cameras or, in this case, a toy revolver—to probe the idea of “woman as object”. The Met says of this particularly punchy pairing: “sending up the old-movie trope of representing the man creeping in shadow carrying a gun, the artist offers instead the death-dealing seductress of film noir in miniature, a doll capable of killing its master at a moment’s notice.”
