Some mid-week mysticism, courtesy of British-Liberian artist Lina Iris Viktor, who traverses “the blurred line of the real and the imagined”, through painting, sculpture, photography and performance, to plunge viewers into her unique world. Viktor frequently includes herself in her intricately rendered work—which adheres to a rich colour palette of blues, reds, black, white and gold—taking on various characters from European portraiture, classical mythology, West African textiles and Aboriginal dream paintings alike. This striking piece was made for the artist’s 2018 exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art, which saw her examine the link between New Orleans and Liberia in her sumptuous, symbol-laden style.
