In the latest work commissioned by Art on the Underground, punk collagist Linder has conceived an 85-metre-long billboard that wraps the entirety of Southwark Underground station in London. Titled The Bower of Bliss, after the original notion of the station as a refugee from the hustle and bustle of the city, this enormous work uncovers the real and mythological histories of women who resided in the area. These stories and images have been excavated from the London Transport Museum’s collection, Southwark Council’s Cuming Museum collection, and even the Underground’s lost property archives, in what the artist describes as a photomontage “at its largest scale ever, in its most public arena ever”.
