Liu Ye, Daydream, 1997

A Monday mood. This sleepy reader was dreamt up by the Chinese painter Liu Ye, whose whimsical work most frequently features small children, or the Dutch cartoon character Miffy, situated in front of abstract paintings by the likes of Piet Mondrian and Paul Klee. Liu’s work is deliberately fun and fantastical, veering away from political topics in favour of subjects that evoke happiness. “Seeking beauty is the last chance for human beings,” he has explained. “It is like shooting at the goal; it arouses an emotion that is wild with joy.”
