The female body is the starting point for Loie Hollowell’s undulating paintings, although the abstraction and perfect symmetry of her compositions may at first glance belie their corporeal content. Her paintings combine combine concave and convex shapes, bulging forth from the wall as if a belly were protruding; it is little surprise that the transformation of the female body during pregnancy and the birthing process are the direct inspiration behind Hollowell’s latest series of work. These are currently on show at GRIMM gallery in Amsterdam, in an exhibition titled One Opening Leads To Another, opened last Saturday as part of Amsterdam Art Weekend.
