In Elephant Issue 42, we set out to discover whether, when it comes to creating art, the number of years you’ve spent on the planet makes any difference. We did this by interviewing a practicing artist from every decade of life, from under ten to almost 100, to ask how their age affects their practice. One such artist was the late Venezuelan-American painter Luchita Hurtado—then 99—whom Elephant’s Emily Steer found to defy “everything we think we know about ageing… lucid, funny and curious” as she was. Purchase the back issue from Elephant Kiosk to discover what Hurtado (the frequent author of compelling first-person, seen-from-above scenes like this) et al had to say.
