Lucienne Bloch, Frida Winking, 1933

It’s Frida(y)! This cheeky portrait of the revered Mexican painter was captured by the Swiss photographer and artist, Lucienne Bloch. The duo first met at a party at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1931. “I hate you,” were the first words that Kahlo uttered to Bloch, the latter noted in her memoirs, apparently because she appeared to be getting on a little too well with Kahlo’s husband, Diego Rivera. Nevertheless, the two went on to become close friends and confidants, and Bloch is responsible for capturing some of the most personal snapshots of Kahlo in existence.
