Luis Barragán, Cuadra San Cristóbal, Mexico, 1969

Who else never tires of Mexican architect Luis Barragán’s Cuadra San Cristóbal? The equestrian compound—comprising stables and riding paddocks for the breeding and training of thoroughbreds horses, and a four-bedroom house—was commissioned in the late 1960s by Folke S. Egerström. Barragán, a horse lover, and his collaborator Andrés Casillas, dreamt up a truly beautiful series of structures and spaces: all flat planes and geometric lines, softened by pinks and earthy browns, and the shrewd manipulation of water and light to enhance the sense of calm.
