Lydia Blakeley, Is This Internet Art?, 2019

Hump day despair, as embodied by this deftly realised ode to 2013’s favourite cat meme, Persian Room Cat Guardian, by British artist Lydia Blakeley. Most of Blakeley’s source imagery—from show dogs to fallen race horses—originates from, and comments upon, the digital life she spends online, as she told Louise Benson in Elephant Issue 41. Blakeley captured this furry fellow in a series of eight joyfully absurd paintings, each showing the toy from a different angle. “I decided to paint this character because it’s so funny and represents so many thoughts and feelings,” she explained. And we concur.
