Marcel Dzama, Untitled (Animals Eating), 2001

Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is best known for his characterful depictions of idiosyncratic characters—some animal, some human, others somewhere in between—engaging in surreal undertakings that “visualise a universe of childhood fantasies and otherworldly fairy tales” (David Zwirner). In Elephant’s latest issue, Dzama shares not a drawing but a recipe for a fried egg sandwich, which the self-professed “late-night artist” likes to make as a midnight snack. “I copied it from this restaurant called Rucola, near to my home in Brooklyn, [and] I feel like I actually improved on it,” he tells us. NB. it contains no living creatures, and tastes delicious. Buy Elephant 47 now to discover the recipe.
