Margaret Morris, Frieze Silhouette, 1925

Happy International Dance Day! This supple set-up was choreographed by the British dancer Margaret Morris, who developed a comprehensive modern dance and movement therapy system based on free, expressive movement in the early 1900s. “She sought to emphasise natural bodily formations in opposition to the formal physical demands of ballet,” explains Bonhams, “many of the poses evolving from poses she found on Classical Greek pottery.” This can be seen in the pleasing positioning of these shoreside dancers, captured by photographer Fred Daniels in 1925 “on the road to the Cap [d’Antibes], with the fort and old town of Antibes in the distance”.
