María Berrío, A Sunburst Restrained, 2019

Indoor lolling, with a hopeful hint of spring: this beautiful collage by the Colombian-born artist María Berrío just about sums up our March mood. Berrío’s work is intricately crafted from Japanese paper and speaks to ideas of “female strength and reciprocal society”, as Holly Black writes in her feature on the artist for the most recent issue of Elephant. By conjuring up a sense of community in her art, Berrío celebrates togetherness as a form of resistance in politically precarious times. “I try to portray the idea that my characters are part of a full world, who can’t exist without others,” she tells Black. “Art and music foster hope.” Read the full article in Elephant #44
