‘The placement directs the visitor to a cyclical movement, either participatory, or visually, or even both.’ Maria Loizidou’s latest outdoor installation at Athens’ archeological area Kerameikos has been organised by NEON, and aims to deliver a conceptual response to this historical space.
Cypriot artist, Loizidou has a politically informed practice, and is no stranger to public projects, often playing with urbanism and pulling her viewers into an active engagement with the work. A Transfer has been created as part of City Project, a public art initiative that has been curated by Syrago Tsiara, the Director of the Thessaloniki Center of Contemporary Art.
The piece is situated in six locations that line the route from the museum to the archeological site. Each location is filled with differing structures that reference the surviving monuments of the space, whilst also playing with the idea of new technology and artistic manipulation. Each piece is constructed from a woven, apparently rigid material that seems to defy the limits of handmade possibility.
As stated by the artist; ‘The six locations can be considered as a type of parallel visual metaphor, which can be perceived both individually and collectively. They are assigned according to conceptual affinities, the importance of this particular space, which rely on the participation of the viewer.’
Maria Loizidou: A Transfer is showing at Kerameikos until 31 October
