This eye-catching structure may look like an outdoor sculpture, but it in fact a small chess pavilion, with an oversized red steel roof, situated in the Parc des Îles in the town of Lens in France. Titled En Passant, and designed by Mariana de Delás and Gartnerfuglen Arkitekter, it was inspired by a lone stone chess playing pavilion that sits on Mount Huashan in China. The architects chose its bright red hue to contrast with the hut’s green surroundings and hope their creation, which houses four chairs, a table and a stone chessboard, will tempt visitors to engage in a game or two while exploring the area.
