French-Venezuelan artist Marisol was best known for her idiosyncratic work in sculpture and assemblage which fused imagery from Pop and folk art—to playful, powerful effect. As exemplified by this colourful group of life-sized women and their dog (featuring a real taxidermy dog head, as you’ll no doubt have spotted). Each figure is a self-portrait, the smallest representing the artist as a child, while the others bear her adult face in photograph or plaster-cast form. The rest of the work is comprised of wood (Marisol’s preferred medium) and found objects, including the handbag, hair accessory and curious canine cranium.
