Martin Creed, Work No. 329: Half the Air in a Given Space, 2006

Balloons galore, courtesy of British multimedia artist Martin Creed. His brand of whimsical “expressionism”, as he terms it, is driven by the belief that “anything is art that is used as art by people”, and most of his installations imaginatively incorporate everyday objects and materials into the viewer experience. This work is no exception. It is one in a series that saw Creed fill up exactly half of a given exhibition space with balloons. Visitors then became a necessary part of the piece as they tried to navigate their way through the room, confronted by globular obstacles at every turn.
