An uplifting start to Monday, courtesy of American sculptor Murjoni Merriweather, creator of this ebullient duo. As a Black woman artist, Merriweather has discovered that “the best way to create and talk about Black culture is through art, especially claywork”, she explains in her artist statement. Her figurative works stand deliberately “tall and proud”, she writes, serving as “a representation of an unforgettable and prominent culture”, while challenging the negative stereotypes of Blackness. “My work is for Black people,” she says. “It is created to display our innate beauty and to encourage us to be proud of who we are.”
