Natalia Goncharova, Cats (Rayist Percep.[tion] in Rose, Black, and Yellow), 1913

Meow! It’s National Black Cat Appreciation Day. Various superstitions mean that black cats are often the last to be adopted, and are more likely to be abandoned. Russian avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova painted this abstracted version of two feline companions and their tabby friend while developing a fusion of Cubo-Futurism and Orphism known as Rayism, which focused on light refraction and movement. She is currently the subject of a retrospective at Tate Modern, until 8 September.
